Allie Machen, LAc, Licensed Acupuncturist
I strongly believe in the natural process of birth and in a mama’s strength to both give birth and enter motherhood confidently, safely, and joyfully. I strive to empower my clients through educational, emotional, and physical support around guiding their own pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum experiences. I believe that Chinese Medicine can be a steadfast partner through this experience. Through acupuncture, herbs, and bodywork we can find pause amidst the intense sensations and emotions that accompany the childbearing years. Even more so, these modalities build upon the mind-body relationship that will lead us to trust our bodies throughout pregnancy, birth, lactation, and beyond.
I provide all of my clients with wholehearted acceptance free from judgment and am truly honored to be part of each experience. I recognize that pregnancy and birth are not dependent upon sexuality or gender and I am passionate about partnering with folks from all walks of life to embrace the miracles of pregnancy, birth, and parenthood.
My journey into health care began in 2008 with the discovery of the doula profession. I realized that birth support offered the opportunity to advocate for mother’s rights while leaving my heart and soul fulfilled at the end of the day. I found that I was able to bring a calm, grounding presence and strong intuition to the birth environment. As a result, many families experienced very powerful and positive birth experiences. As time passed, my appetite for more knowledge became so strong that I realized I needed to return to graduate school. After much deliberation I choose to pursue Chinese Medicine over midwifery. While birth is still my passion, in Chinese Medicine I found a unique opportunity to empower patients to connect with their bodies and their health. With both a high Cesarean rate and interventions more common than not, our modern maternity system is in crisis and there has never been a more important time for us to empower each other to reclaim the innate knowledge our bodies carry generation to generation.
Having been raised on a sailboat in the Puget Sound, I find great joy and peacefulness on and near the water. I attribute much of my calm and intuitive nature to the significant time spent outdoors in my childhood. I attended college in Massachusetts and hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Government from Smith College. In 2015, after four years of study, I earned a Master’s Degree in Oriental Medicine from the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine. In addition to being a practitioner of East Asian medicine and a doula, I am the mother of two spirited young boys. Motherhood is as wonderful and challenging as anything I have ever done and I am thankful to raise my children in the vibrant and progressive community we have here in Portland. As a family, we enjoy working in our garden, hiking in Forest Park and taking advantage of all of Portland’s family music.
Since seeing Allie Machen LAc at the Willow Tree Wellness Clinic, (unbelievably) my daily headaches have vanished! I am not one to make big promises and exaggerate since everyone is different...however, I have had productive treatments with her! She is talented and humble, as good as it gets!
Headaches have Vanished!
Patient Since June 2016
I've had acupuncture for years with a variety of practitioners. Allie is definitely one of the best; empathic, knowledgeable, and takes the time to listen before each session. I look forward to each visit for relief from chronic neck pain and general fine-tuning.
Acupuncture with Allie

Allie is a nurturing capable care provider. Very impressed and happy with her level of expertise as well as her kind communication. I hadn't received cupping before and love it! She asked important questions that I have not thought about, and made a very good supplement suggestion. So happy to have found her.
