Back Pain – Lifestyle and Home Remedies

Friday, May 10th, 2013

Oy! My aching neck and back! With the rise of technology and our automotive society, we have become far more sedentary than our body’s have been designed. We need to get up and MOVE!  Dance! Go for an evening walk to decompress and reconnect to your partner! Shake it out people!

A sedentary lifestyle makes us more prone to back pain, neck pain, more aches and pains in general throughout our bodies. Other than incorporating more movement into your day, another way to turn your sedentary lifestyle around is to added some stretching exercises into your day. In the morning upon rising, and again in the evening after being at work, especially if you have been behind a computer all day. Stretching exercises can help relax your tight muscles and help loosen the compression of nerve roots which might be the cause of your back pain. When you engage in stretching workouts, avoid any twisting, bouncing or jerking during the stretch. Also when you do a stretching routine be sure to hold your stretching posture for at least half a minute. Try yoga or even simple stretching to your comfort level. Get the blood flowing!

Acupuncture or Physiotherapy

Having a back massage or having regular acupuncture for your back pain greatly helps in relieving back pain. These procedures not only help mitigate the pain but can accelerate the healing process of any back injury as well. If you are experiencing an acute flare up, it is important to seek treatment as soon as possible. The quicker we get started with treatments, the sooner you will be out of pain.

Diet Changes

Reduce your intake of inflammatory foods. The biggest offenders are : gluten, sugar, caffeine, soy and dairy. Try eating as a vegetarian one day in a week.  This means solely eating vegetables and fresh fruits and/or juicing your own green vegetable juices with a small amount of fruit for flavor. This will help lessen the inflammation in your body, relieving pressure, aches and pains all over including your spine. If you have arthritis, is is especially important for you to eliminate highly inflammatory foods from your diet. Of course there is the occasional meal that will include something from the list, but strive to keep your diet clean 80% of the time. And then completely ENJOY that 20% without guilt. Pay attention to your body’s pain signals and get back on track the next day!

Patients with arthritis can also take cider vinegar, capsaicin, chamomile, honey and ginger to build back strength and battle back pain and swelling. Herbal supplements like turmeric capsules and green tea are very good antioxidants that have helped some in relieving body pain including back pain.

Adequate Rest

Sometimes a good rest may be all you need to remove body stress and pain in your body. If you can, lying down for a brief period during the day can help reduce discomfort or soreness in the back and can help quicken the healing process as well. Get a foam roller that you can line up along your spine and do some gentle rolling from side to side to loosen the muscles along your spine. And when was the last time you replaced your mattress? When you spend 8 hours a night in bed, you need to have a quality mattress with the correct firmness for your sleep position – AND good pillows to support your neck as well!

Heat and Ice

For acute back pain due to a recent injury or overuse, I recommend ice. But for chronic back pain, I advise heat instead. You need to warm and soften the muscles. The heat will flush the area with fresh blood, nourishing the tissues and is far more soothing. Some days call for a hot epsom salt bath before heading to bed. Use a high concentration of epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) to get its maximum benefit of muscle relaxation – 1 pound of epsom salts in a full tub of water.

If this is not enough to get you back into your groove, please give us a call to get you in for an evaluation right away. Acupuncture, myofascial release massage, cupping massage or electro-acupuncture can offer you instant pain reduction and get you on the road to recovery!.

Whiplash Treatment… What You May Not Know About Chinese Medicine and Neck Pain

Saturday, March 9th, 2013

Auto Accident Whiplash Treatment, Portland ORMost types of pain are incredibly disconcerting; however, neck pain can be excruciating and often leads to a poor quality of life.  Mild neck pain may not be good enough reason to take in pain medications although the problem with this kind of pain is that it tends to linger for the entire day and even into the night.   Severe neck pain is just plain unbearable and the conventional way to address this pain is with over-the-counter or prescription painkillers.

Massage therapy for neck pain can work for a little while but often is not as long lasting as you want it to be.  A better alternative neck pain treatment is acupuncture which can treat all types and degrees of neck pain.  If your neck pain originates from an injury like whiplash from an auto accident, acupuncture can be a potent neck pain treatment and with just a few sessions, it can provide you with permanent relief of your neck pain. In Oregon, all automotive insurance PIP (personal injury plans) cover up to $15, 000 of care when the injury is the result of a car accident. Studies show that acupuncture is so effective for neck pain that treatments are also widely covered by health insurance companies.  For quick results that last, I suggest acupuncture treatments combined with massage therapy.

Poor Posture

More often than not poor posture can cause muscle strain in the neck, head and shoulders leading to back and neck pain.  The easiest way to overcome these types of pain is to correct your sitting position and standing posture especially during your work time. If sitting at a desk most of the day, make sure your elbows and knees are at 90 degree angles to the desk to prevent strain. If you want to complement your change of posture to alleviate neck pain, you can avail of acupuncture to bring you substantial relief.

Neck injuries that cause neck pain include back muscle strain and whiplash.  Acupuncture whiplash treatment and back muscle strain therapy means refraining from medications that have several side effects to the body.

Traditional Chinese medicine acknowledges the therapeutic power of acupuncture to regain the natural balance of the body.  Acupuncture uses ultra thin needles inserted at various points in the body, points that are associated to the painful areas of the body.

Western medicine has stated that acupuncture neck pain treatments stimulate the central nervous system to release natural and beneficial pain killing chemicals in the body to neutralize neck and back pain and make the patient as relaxed as possible.  Other Western medical experts also see that acupuncture helps improve blood flow in the body which means the relaxation of taut and tense muscles and the removal of pain.  The improved blood flow also means an improved immune system and overall good health.

Another benefit of acupuncture is that it has none of the side effects that medications have.  This has made acupuncture quite popular to people who want a safer way to pain relief.  Acupuncture is also a holistic therapy and does address not only the symptoms of neck pain, chronic or not but also its root as well.

If you’ve been in an auto accident in Portland and you’re looking for whiplash treatment without the side effects of prescription drugs, call Willow Tree Wellness Center today at 503-281-0030.

Why do you want me to stick out my tongue?

Tuesday, February 19th, 2013

Portland Acupuncturist Kine FischlerIt is always fun to watch a new patient’s expression change when I ask them to stick out their tongue. In Chinese Medicine, tongue and pulse diagnosis are a couple of techniques used to assess a person’s inherent constitution of their body, influence of external factors and the overall state of their current health.

The tongue is highly vascular and is richly supplied by both the nervous and circulatory system. It is nourished by saliva secreted by salivary glands and controlled by our autonomic nervous system. It contains water, electrolytes, mucus, and enzymes. It serves many functions and the appearance is influenced by physiological changes in the body. We can see how our whole body is functioning and detect imbalances in different organ systems by observing changes in our tongue’s appearance.

What does the tongue have to tell us?

First we are getting a general view of your health, and if sick the extent of the illness in the body. We look at the shape, the color, and the coating of the tongue.

Shape – Reflects the quality of the circulation of the Qi and Blood.

Color – Represents the condition of the blood, yin, and fluids as well as the yang and Qi.

Coating – Denotes the strength of externally contracted illnesses and differentiates whether it is excessive or deficient in nature.

A ‘normal’ tongue fits in the mouth, is soft and moist with a pale red tongue body and should have a very thin clear coating, exhibiting proper enzymatic content and salivary secretions. To illustrate diagnosis, I will give some simple examples of health imbalances. A tongue that is swollen or has toothmarks on the edges indicates an impairment in the body’s processing of fluids or a lack of energy behind the movement of fluids. A purplish tongues denotes stagnation in the body that may be leading to pain or emotional frustrations. A thick yellow tongue coating shows us that their is an impairment in the digestive system with a build up of internal heat and dampness that can manifest as anger, stomach upset or alcohol toxicity. Check out your tongue the morning after a night out for drinks or when you have a bout with the stomach bug, you will see what I am mean!

We then look at specific areas of the tongue that correspond to specific organ systems and their meridians in the body.

The front and tip of the tongue reflect the nature of the Heart and Lung. A scarlet red tip may indicate restlessness in the Heart meridian manifesting as insomnia, anxiety or generalized mental agitation.

The middle of the tongue shows up how our Spleen and Stomach are functioning together to support our digestive system. A red, raised center may indicate Stomach heat with the symptoms of heartburn, indigestion or excessive appetite.

The back of the tongue gives us information about our Kidney and Urinary Bladder organs and their meridians. A thicker white coat indicates an impairment in fluids, possibly urinary disorders.

Next time you are in, just ask for more information about your tongue diagnosis!  In the meantime, take a moment to look at yours and watch the changes.

How does Acupuncture work? The physiology behind the mystery.

How does acupuncture work ?  What is it doing ?  These are the questions that I asked when first introduced to Oriental Medicine and  now answer every day as an acupuncturist. Those of us who practice acupuncture in the West have done a disservice to the medicine by only giving the simplistic explanation of “moving Qi,” and then defining Qi as “energy” that travels through invisible “meridians.” Being a skeptic comes naturally to me. I have an inquisitive mind that is not easily dissuaded by simple esoteric explanations OR reductionist Western scientific rationalizations.  However I have found truth in both Western scientific and Eastern philosophical reasonings.  True to my integrative approach of taking the best of eastern medicine and accentuating with the best of western medicine,  I discovered that the poetry of Oriental medicine can not singularly be explained by Daoist philosophy or Western diagnostic imaging.  Instead Oriental medicine is better served by looking at it from both points of view to find the synthesis where they both meet.
